Hurlcon Gas Heater F2 Error – Causes & Fix Guide
The Hurlcon F2 error indicates a high temperature safety shutdown, triggered when the heater detects water exceeding safe operating limits or a fault with the hi-limit sensor.
This is a common condition across Hurlcon gas heaters and equivalent AstralPool HX and JX models. In many cases, the error is normal and will reset automatically, but persistent F2 errors usually indicate a faulty hi-limit sensor or circulation issue.
Note: These Hurlcon heater error codes and faults also apply to AstralPool HX and JX gas heaters, as they are the same heater models rebranded under AstralPool.

What Causes a Hurlcon F2 Error?
- Water temperature exceeding set limits
- Faulty hi-limit temperature sensor (52°C)
- Heat build-up after pump stops
- Restricted water flow through heater

Many F2 errors are linked to water flow issues or faulty temperature protection components.

This F2 error applies to the following Hurlcon and AstralPool gas heater models:
- WX75, WX120
- HX70, HX120 (also AstralPool HX)
- JX130, JX160 (also AstralPool JX)
- MX125, MX150, MX200, MX250, MX300, MX400, MX500
- Natural Gas and LPG models
What is the Hurlcon F2 Error?
The F2 error is triggered by the hi-limit sensor when water temperature exceeds safe limits inside the heater.
This is a normal safety feature that shuts down the heater to prevent overheating damage.
Before troubleshooting:
- Check actual water temperature with a thermometer
- Allow the heater to cool down if water is hot
If the water is not hot and the error persists, the issue is likely a faulty sensor or circulation problem.
Common Causes of F2 Errors
F2 errors often occur during normal operation, especially in spa heating scenarios where residual heat builds up after the pump stops.
However, persistent errors are usually caused by:
- Faulty hi-limit sensor
- Corroded sensor connections
- Poor water circulation
- Blocked filter or plumbing
These issues can also be linked to temperature sensor faults or system imbalance.
How to Fix a Hurlcon F2 Error
Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
- Turn off the heater and allow water to cool
- Reset the heater by unplugging for 10 seconds
- Restart the water pump and ensure proper flow
- Turn heater back on and monitor operation
- If error persists, inspect hi-limit sensor
- Check for corrosion or damage
- Replace sensor if faulty
In many cases, the error will clear automatically once proper water flow resumes.
Hi-Limit Sensor Location
The hi-limit sensor is located on the outlet side of the water manifold where heated water exits the heater.
- HX / WX models: right-hand side of manifold
- JX models: same location as HX
- MX models: far right end of manifold
