Pool heater ignition failure happens when the heater attempts to start but cannot ignite the gas burner or cannot maintain a detected flame. This can be caused by gas supply problems, faulty ignition components, flame sensing issues, airflow restrictions, or control faults.
Most gas pool heaters follow a startup sequence. If any part of that sequence fails, the heater will shut down as a safety precaution.
A gas pool heater must confirm several conditions before ignition can succeed, including water flow, gas supply, spark generation, flame detection, and safe airflow.
In a normal ignition sequence, the heater checks safety circuits, opens the gas valve, creates a spark at the ignition electrode, and then confirms flame through a flame sensor or flame rectification signal.
If the flame is not established or not detected, the heater will stop the ignition cycle and may display a fault code.

Ignition failure can appear in several ways depending on the heater model and fault type.
If gas is not reaching the burner correctly, ignition cannot occur.
The ignition electrode is responsible for producing the spark needed to ignite the burner. If it is worn, cracked, dirty, or misaligned, the heater may fail to light.
Even if the burner lights, the heater must confirm flame is present. If the flame sensor cannot detect it, the heater will shut down.
