🛠️ Clearance Requirements
The AstralPool ICI Gas Pool Heater must be installed in accordance with AS/NZS 5601 gas installation standards to ensure safe operation, correct combustion airflow, and long-term reliability.
The ICI heater is approved for reduced clearances, making it suitable for compact equipment pads and retrofit installations. Minimum clearance requirements vary depending on whether the heater is installed outdoors or indoors, and whether surrounding surfaces are combustible or non-combustible.
Outdoor Installations:
- Front: 300 mm
- Sides: 300 mm
- Rear: 300 mm (50 mm if non-combustible surface)
- Above: 1000 mm
Indoor Installations:
- Front: 300 mm
- Sides: 300 mm (50 mm if non-combustible surface)
- Rear: 300 mm (50 mm if non-combustible surface)
- Above: 500 mm
Heaters must not be installed beneath decks, enclosed structures, or eaves unless all ventilation and flue clearance requirements are met. The surrounding area must remain free of combustible materials, garden debris, and sprinkler overspray.
🛠️ Indoor Installations
The AstralPool ICI Gas Pool Heater is certified for indoor installation when installed by a licensed gas fitter and converted using the approved AstralPool Indoor Flue Kit (Part No. 78270).
Indoor installations must comply with AS/NZS 5601 and require dedicated combustion air supply and correctly sized ventilation openings. Two permanent ventilation openings to the outside are mandatory to ensure safe combustion and to prevent the build-up of combustion gases.
Minimum free ventilation opening areas:
- ICI 200: 57,000 mm² per opening
- ICI 400: 87,000 mm² per opening
The heater is supplied from the factory configured for outdoor use and must be converted to indoor configuration by an authorised technician. The indoor flue system may be run up to 16 metres with a maximum of three 90-degree bends.
For safety, AstralPool strongly recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors in the heater room and adjacent occupied spaces. LPG heaters are not recommended for indoor installations unless approved by the local authority having jurisdiction.
Indoor heater rooms must not contain chemicals, fuel, or spa blowers, and adequate drainage should be provided to protect against water leaks or condensation.

Water Chemistry Compatibility
Correct water chemistry is critical to the performance and lifespan of the AstralPool ICI Gas Pool Heater. Damage caused by poor water balance or excessive sanitiser levels is not covered under warranty.
The ICI range uses a high-performance cupronickel heat exchanger, which offers excellent corrosion resistance, however it still requires properly balanced water to prevent scaling, erosion, and chemical attack.
Recommended water balance parameters:
- pH: 7.6 – 7.8
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- Calcium Hardness: 100 – 350 ppm
- Salinity: Maximum 5000 ppm
- Free Chlorine: Maximum 3 ppm
- Bromine: Maximum 5 ppm
Water chemistry should be tested at least weekly. Salt chlorinators or chemical injection systems must be installed downstream of the heater with a suitable non-return valve. Chemicals should never be added directly to the skimmer, as concentrated acidic water can pass through the heater and cause rapid heat exchanger corrosion. Always distribute chemicals evenly across the pool surface.
