IXI & JXi Heater High Limit Fault – Causes & Fixes

The High Limit fault on AstralPool IXI and Zodiac JXi gas pool heaters means the heater has overheated and shut down for safety.

This fault is usually caused by restricted water flow, overheating inside the heat exchanger, or a fault with one of the heater’s temperature protection components.

Overheating shutdowns can result in the heater not heating consistently or turning off shortly after startup.

Common Causes of a High Limit Fault

  • Low water flow through the heater
  • Dirty or blocked filter
  • Blocked baskets or partially closed valves
  • Blocked heat exchanger
  • Faulty high-limit switch or temperature sensor
  • Internal overheating caused by circulation problems

In many cases, a High Limit fault is caused by the same underlying circulation issue as a Check Flow fault.

How to Fix a High Limit Fault

  • Clean or backwash the filter
  • Check pump basket and skimmer basket
  • Make sure all valves are fully open
  • Confirm strong water return flow
  • Allow the heater to cool before restarting
  • Inspect temperature-related components if the fault returns

If overheating continues after restoring flow, the heater may also have a water sensor fault or another internal issue affecting temperature control.

When to Book a Heater Repair

If the High Limit fault keeps returning after basic flow checks, the heater may have an overheating issue, sensor problem, or internal restriction that needs professional diagnosis.
